The separation of finely-divided solids from liquids constitutes an important stage in many industrial processes. Separation of mixtures ranging from highly concentrated slurries to slightly turbid liquids must be effected in circumstances where the solids, liquid or both phases may have value. Separations may be achieved by use of a membrane or filter medium which, positioned in the path of a flowing suspension, will allow passage of the fluid whilst retaining solids on the surface or within the medium. Alternatively the two phases may be separated by sedimentation processes involving gravitational or centrifugal force. In either mode, separation difficulties are sometimes experienced with the result that solid-liquid separation is often a bottleneck in commercial plants. Operational difficulties and plant failures are associated with the random nature of the particles being separated variations in size, shape, states of aggregation, compressibility, etc. , produce a wide range of problems. Plugging of the filter medium or the collapse of the solids under applied stress lead to slow flowrates of liquid. THE main purpose of writing this monograph is to give a picture of the progress made in recent years in understanding three of the deepest results of Functional Analysis-namely, the open-mapping and closed graph theorems, and the so-called Krein-~mulian theorem. In order to facilitate the reading of this book, some of the important notions and well-known results about topological and vector spaces have been collected in Chapter 1. The proofs of these results are omitted for the reason that they are easily available in any standard book on topology and vector spaces e.g. Bourbaki [2], Keiley [18], or Kothe [22]. The results of Chapter 2 are supposed to be weil known for a study of topological vector spaces as weil. Most of the definitions and notations of Chapter 2 are taken from Bourbaki's books [3] and [4] with some trimming and pruning here and there. Keeping the purpose of this book in mind, the presentation of the material is effected to give a quick resume of the results and the ideas very commonly used in this field, sacrificing the generality of some theorems for which one may consult other books, e.g. [3], [4], and [22]. The present supplement to C.G.J. Jacobi's collected works contains the second revised edition of the "Lectures on Dynamics" edited by A. Clebsch in 1866 without the five treatises from Jacobi's literary estate added to them at that time.
According to the plans drawn up for the publication of Jacobi's collected works the latter along with the major treatise "Nova methodus aequtionen differentiales partiellen primi ordinus inter numerum variabilium quemcunque propositas integrandi" , (New meth- ods for the integration of first order partial differential equations of any number of variables), also edited by Clebsch, and a few other shorter works will form the contents of the fifth volume. As has been remarked in the preface to the first edition of the "Lec- tures", they are based on the not es prepared with great care nad accu- racy by C. W. Borckhardt who attended the lectures given by Jacobi at the University of Knigsberg in the winter semester of 1842-43. The changes made by Clebsch in the edition of Brochardt's text are minor. Also Mr. E. Lottner, the publisher of the new edition, has only made slight stylistic changes in certain places where the express ions were not precise or sufficiently clear, and for the rest has confined himself to cor- recting a few printing and computational errors remaining in the first edition. The practice tests don't mimick the actual AP exam. After looking at some questions on their practice test, I had to turn back and look at the cover of the book--I thought that I was looking at some sort of pre-calculus book. For example, one multiple-choice question (on the practice exam) asks you to complete the double-angle formula for sine(2x). How ridiculous! Such a question would never be on the AP exam. Another multiple-choice question asks for the interval over which ln(x+3) is nonnegative Again, another question which is highly unlikely to appear on the AP exam because it's a simple pre-calculus question.
